Man fatally shot in Aurora shopping center parking lot

One person in critical condition after shootout with Denver officers in Globeville, police say

One person was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition following an exchange of gunfire with Denver police Wednesday night.

Denver police said they came under fire from multiple suspects before returning shots. No officers were injured in the shooting, police said.

Denver police Division Chief Ron Thomas said officers originally responded to the report of “individuals armed with a weapon” in the area of West Seventh Avenue and Federal Boulevard around 10:30 p.m.

Suspects were seen by police from the department’s helicopter getting into a silver four-door sedan.

Officers on the ground allegedly attempted making a traffic stop, but the suspect’s vehicle had driven away. Thomas said officers stopped their ground pursuit, using the helicopter to track the suspects instead.

The vehicle stopped in the area of East 49th Avenue and North Washington Street in the Globeville neighborhood, where the suspects got out of their car, Thomas said.

Officers on the ground arrived there and came under gunfire, Thomas said.

Thomas said two officers shot back, injuring one suspect at that location. Two others were taken into custody at the scene, and a fourth person was taken into custody following a search conducted in the area after the shooting.

Investigators believe two to three additional suspects are still on the run, Thomas said.

The shooting led police to place the area from 49th to 50th avenues and Washington to North Pearl streets under a shelter-in-place order.

Thomas reported no other injuries other than the suspect shot by police.
