Must-visit restaurants and hikes in Pagosa Springs, according to “Building Roots” stars Cristi and Ben Dozier
Cristi and Ben Dozier and their HGTV show, “Building Roots,” are helping shine a spotlight on Pagosa Springs. The town, located at 7,126 feet in the San Juan Mountains, is named for the Ute word “Pagosah,” which translates to “healing waters,” according to the local visitors bureau.
As the name suggests, the area is home to geothermal hot springs and so much more.
When they’re not working, the Doziers hang out at their coffee joint, Root House Coffee + Shop, and join their four kids in sports, such as skiing, fishing and bike riding. Cristi and Ben dished on their favorite local attractions, so you too can experience Pagosa Springs like a local.

Favorite local hikes: The downtown river walk, Piedra River Trail, Piedra Falls and Opal Lake
“Our town is literally built around the river, so that’s a joy we literally absorb almost every single day,” Ben said, adding the Piedra River Trail is also a worthwhile journey. In the fall, Opal Lake has a massive Aspen grove with stunning colors, Cristi added.
Favorite restaurants: Alley House Grille, Meander Riverside Eatery, Kip’s Grill, Chavolo’s Mexican Restaurant, Thai Pagosa and Sage Eatery
The latter is a burger and barbecue spot owned by a Texas chef. “We’re just so thankful to have this Texas foodie here,” Cristi said.
Favorite happy hour spots: The Neon Mallard and Riff Raff Brewing Co.
Neon Mallard is Ben’s favorite bar. “I go there daily and sit in the back little boardroom/cubby hole and wrap up my day,” he said.
Best cultural attractions: The numerous hot springs and Wolf Creek Ski Area
The local rodeo is also featured on Season 1 of “Building Roots.”
