Encore! – French exhibitions celebrate 60 years of Algerian independence

Issued on:

On the 60th anniversary of Algerian independence, we take a look at the French exhibitions paying tribute to Algeria’s freedom and exploring the two countries’ shared history. In Marseille, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations has dedicated an exhibit to resistance icon Emir Abdelkader, the religious-turned-military leader who led the struggle against France’s colonial invasion.

Meanwhile, the Arab World Institute in Paris is hosting a joint exhibition from French photojournalist Raymond Depardon and Algerian writer Kamel Daoud, as well as showcasing a major collection of Algerian paintings. Finally, we go out dancing to French-Algerian artist DJ Snake’s viral clip “Disco Maghreb”, described as “a love song” to his country.
